This is a fresh analysis from what I've read in the past about Inoki vs Ali. Specifically, your references to why you found this bout fascinating, and not boring as is the standard label, I found particularly of note, as well as some of the outside details you wrote about here like the long-term impact on Ali's legs from the kicks from Inoki.

I appreciate the kind words! Thank you so much. Yeah, I had no idea that this match of all things affected Ali's career until the end. That, along with its influence on MMA, makes me think it should be talked about a lot more.

On paper, there certainly seems to have been a lot at risk for Ali in that fight in terms of his stature and conversely a lot to gain for Inoki.

It makes me wonder if all the rule changes at the final hour were because Ali was afraid of how those risks would ruin his reputation.

That seems like a likely explanation. I have a book about Ali and Inoki from a few years ago, but I haven’t read it yet. The discourse here has got me interested in finally reading it.

If it's one from Josh Gross, I'm also wanting to read it as well. I'm glad to have helped spark your interest in the subject!
